Glossy materials can require a very diffuse illumination without hot spots or shadows. The dome light produces the needed uniform light intensity thanks to LEDs illuminating the bright, matte inside of the dome walls. The middle of the image becomes darker because of the hole in the dome through which the camera is looking.
