When an object needs to be illuminated parallel to the optical axis, i.e. directly from the front, a semi-transparent mirror is used to create an on-axial light source. On-axis is also called coaxial. Since the beams are parallel to the optical axis, direct reflexes appear on all surfaces parallel to the focal plane.
